PDHCT is proud to have supported the tremendously creative environmental advocacy work of The National Youth Theatre in partnership with arts charity IdeasTap.
Slick
In September 2011 the National Youth Theatre staged Slick, an outdoor performance about global waste, staged on Sheffield’s Park Hill Estate and starring 300 NYT members.
To accompany this innovative production, The Trust launched a match-fund open to environmental groups taking action on the issues of freshwaters and protected areas of our seas. The fund offered to match-fund £100,000 towards £400,000-worth of projects. The following organizations received funding: Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, Dorset Wildlife Trust, Hampshire and IOW Trust, Leicester & Rutland Wildlife Trust, the Marine Biological Association, Ulster Wildlife Trust, Cornwall Wildlife Trust and Cumbria Wildlife Trust.
S’warm
In August 2010, the National Youth Theatre staged S’warm, a 500-strong production highlighting the catastrophic decline of the bee population worldwide.
In support of this event, the Trust launched a Challenge Fund to support insect conservation by offering leverage funding. Three Wildlife Trusts were awarded funds: Cumbria to support the Cumbria Hay Meadows project, Leicestershire and Rutland for meadow restoration in Charnwood Forest, and Yorkshire to take forward a range of habitat works along the River Ouse corridor.
